DECLUTTERING

Do you ever walk into a room and feel instantly drained, overwhelmed by the sheer number of things around you? Clutter isn’t always obvious, but its impact can be felt in ways we don’t always recognize. Often, we adapt to the mess, not realizing how much it’s affecting our focus, energy, and ability to fully enjoy our space.

A cluttered home doesn’t just take up space, it takes up mental energy. When your environment is filled with things that no longer serve you, it can create unnecessary stress, make daily tasks harder, and prevent your home from being the place of rest and inspiration it should be.

Why We Don’t See It

Often, clutter sneaks up on us because we slowly adapt to it. That pile of mail on the dining table? You’ve seen it so many times that it blends into the background. The overflowing closet? It’s become the norm, making it harder to recognize as something that’s actually weighing you down.

Our brains are excellent at normalizing our environments and habits, even when they’re no longer serving us. But the good news? Once you become aware of clutter, you can take steps to address it and restore a sense of peace and ease in your space and life.

This “clutter blindness” sneaks up on all of us. I see it with my clients all the time: The busy mom who doesn’t notice her overflowing coat rack until her 5-year-old can’t find his school jacket. The work-from-home dad who’s gotten so used to his “pending” paper piles that they’ve become permanent desk decorations.

What Is Clutter, Really?

Clutter isn’t just a pile of mail on the dining table or a closet where yo can’t see the floow. It can show up in different ways:

  • Physical Clutter: Items you no longer use or you really don’t like, but can’t seem to let go of.
  • Digital Clutter: Overflowing email inboxes, disorganized files, or a phone full of screenshots you’ll never revisit.
  • Mental Clutter: Worries, never-ending to-do lists, or random thoughts that occupy your mind.
  • Emotional Clutter: Feelings connected to past experiences or relationships that hold you back.

The key to identifying clutter? Recognizing if something doesn’t add value to your life and seeing how it may be holding you back.

How to Spot Physical Clutter in Your Life

  • Look for items you don’t use, love, or find practical: Walk through your space and notice what you haven’t used in months or no longer enjoy. If an item doesn’t serve a clear purpose or make your soul smile, it may be clutter.
  • Identify areas that feel overwhelming: Do certain areas of your home feel chaotic or hard to move around in? If you find yourself constantly shifting items around or avoiding certain spaces, clutter may be the cause.
  • Pay attention to your reaction to a space: Does walking into a room make you feel relaxed or stressed? A cluttered environment can create mental overload, making it harder to focus, unwind, or enjoy your home.

The Hidden Impact of Clutter

Clutter doesn’t just affect the way your home looks; it can have far-reaching consequences for your mental and emotional well-being. Here are some ways clutter can impact your life:

  • Increased stress: Cluttered spaces can make it harder to relax, causing underlying tension and frustration.
  • Feeling drained by too many decisions: When every surface is covered and nothing has a designated place, even small decisions—like where to put your keys—can feel overwhelming.
  • Disagreements about the state of your home: Clutter in shared spaces can lead to frustration, disagreements, and conflict over space and responsibilities.
  • Difficulty staying focused or completing tasks: A cluttered workspace or kitchen counter pulls your attention in too many directions, making it harder to focus and get things done.

When your home is clear, functional, and intentional, it reduces unnecessary stress and distraction, allowing you to focus on what truly matters in your life.

A Real-Life Breakthrough

One of my clients had a large collection of shoes. She was a shoe lover and had spent years building her collection. But what she didn’t realize was that some of her shoes had actually become clutter. She wasn’t using them, some were falling apart, and others she didn’t even like anymore. Despite this, they were taking over her home office space, making it harder for her to focus and be productive.

She never thought to get rid of any of her shoes and didn’t recognize how they were impacting her ability to work efficiently. Once we worked together to sort through them, she was able to let go of the ones that no longer served her and reclaim her space for what it was meant for – her work and creativity. The transformation wasn’t just physical; she felt a renewed sense of clarity and motivation.

This is the power of creating an environment that supports your growth, rather than holding you back.

Taking Action

Decluttering isn’t about what you are losing – it’s about creating a space that truly supports your lifestyle. By letting go of what no longer serves you, you open the door to a home that feels lighter, more intentional, and aligned with your needs. By becoming aware of what no longer serves you, you can start creating a space that works for you, not against you.
