When a young family from Northern California reached out for a professional organizer to revamp their cluttered garage into a versatile storage space, they had a clear vision. Their garage, previously a catch-all space, needed to accommodate motorcycle gear, outdoor games, luggage, golf equipment, lawn chairs, and more. The garage was narrow, less than four feet wide. It was important to optimize the room’s functionality without sacrificing accessibility or blocking the beautiful view from the back window. I was up for the challenge!
The Process
To tackle this project, I partnered with The Container Store and utilized their new Elfa Garage+ system, which was ideal for the dimensions of this narrow space. The slate gray shelves’ textured finish looks great and is designed to withstand the rigorous demands of the garage. This project required extensive remote planning, as it was a travel project. Working with The Container Store’s design and installation teams proved to be effortless, ensuring that every detail was handled until I flew in from San Diego to declutter and then organize the space.
Before any items were placed back into the garage, I thoroughly cleaned the area, removing cobwebs and vacuuming the entire space to ensure it was spotless. This step was crucial not only for aesthetics but also for creating a healthier environment free from dust and spiders.
The Results
Every item found its place, with frequently used items stored in one convenient location. We used all the existing storage tubs and bins the client had on hand and purchased a few more for added functionality. The Large Latching Clear Storage Box from Brightroom was perfect for housing Christmas decorations, while the rugged Chancellor Baskets were utilized for items that needed to be easily accessible.
The Elfa Garage+ system has a variety of hook attachments that were ideal for hanging ladders, helmets, golf bags, lawn chairs, and more. These hooks can be easily removed and rearranged according to the family’s changing needs.

This family now enjoys a beautifully functional space design that not only meets their storage needs but also contributes to their enjoyment of the summer months.
